General Manager – Engineering & Construction

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced General Manager to lead the overall business operations and drive the achievement of revenue, profitability, operational, and strategic objectives.

The General Manager will be responsible for providing strategic direction, strengthening business performance, managing organizational growth, developing key client and stakeholder relationships, and ensuring that the Company’s operations remain commercially sustainable and aligned with its long-term objectives.

The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background combined with proven experience in business management, project management, project controls, contract negotiations, strategic planning, and organizational leadership within the engineering or construction sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Take overall responsibility for achieving the Company’s budgeted revenue and profit targets.
• Provide strategic leadership and direction to ensure sustainable business growth and profitability.
• Advise owners and senior management on business strategy, commercial matters, operational performance, and organizational development.
• Develop, review, and implement Company processes, policies, and procedures to strengthen operational controls and protect the Company’s interests.
• Establish effective checks and balances to ensure business objectives, financial performance, and organizational interests are properly safeguarded.
• Lead and motivate employees by creating an environment that encourages accountability, professional development, empowerment, and high performance.
• Build and maintain strong working relationships across the Company and wider group.
• Promote a culture of ethics, integrity, accountability, transparency, and professional conduct across the organization.
• Ensure customer satisfaction remains a key priority through quality delivery, adherence to project schedules, safety, and effective service.
• Lead organizational change initiatives in response to changing economic conditions, market trends, customer expectations, and industry developments.
• Continuously evaluate and evolve the Company’s business strategy to address immediate challenges while achieving long-term objectives.
• Identify new business opportunities and support the Company’s growth and market expansion.
• Maintain and strengthen the Company’s reputation and market position within the engineering and construction sector.
• Monitor market trends, competitors, customer requirements, and emerging business opportunities.
• Provide strategic input into project planning, project controls, commercial management, and business development activities.
• Oversee business performance and ensure appropriate corrective actions are taken where revenue, profitability, cost, or operational targets are not being achieved.
• Review and support major commercial and contractual negotiations.
• Ensure effective planning, resource allocation, cost control, and operational management across the business.
• Represent the Company in meetings and negotiations with key clients, consultants, contractors, business partners, and other external stakeholders.
• Support senior management in major business decisions through effective analysis, evaluation, and risk assessment.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with key customers and stakeholders to support repeat business and long-term partnerships.
• Ensure compliance with Company Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality requirements and applicable legislation.
• Take reasonable care of personal health and safety and that of employees and others affected by Company activities.
• Perform other strategic and operational responsibilities as required by the owners or senior management.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is mandatory.
• Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) or a related discipline is preferred.
• 15+ years of overall professional experience in engineering, construction, contracting, or a related industry.
• Minimum 6 years of experience in a Business Manager, General Manager, Operations Manager, or similar senior management position.
• Proven experience managing business operations and achieving revenue and profitability targets.
• Strong knowledge of project management and project controls.
• Strong business management and commercial understanding.
• Proven experience in contract negotiation and commercial decision-making.
• Strong planning, analytical, evaluation, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience in business development, market expansion, and strategic planning.
• Strong leadership and employee motivation skills.
• Excellent presentation, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to analyze business and operational data and make informed strategic decisions.

Preferred Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be an experienced engineering professional who has progressed into senior business leadership, with a proven track record of managing business performance, revenue, profitability, projects, clients, and teams.

Candidates with experience managing a full business unit, P&L, operational teams, major client relationships, and strategic business development within the construction or engineering sector will be highly preferred.

Strong commercial acumen, leadership capability, and the ability to balance business growth, profitability, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and employee development are essential.
